Hollow Tiles: Causes, How to Fix Them and How to Prevent Them

Hollow tiles can be easy to miss at first. You walk across a beautifully tiled living room and suddenly hear it: a different sound beneath one of the tiles.

You tap the area again and hear a hollow sound.

The tile may still look perfectly fine. There may be no visible crack, no movement and no obvious sign of damage. Yet that hollow sound can indicate that something beneath the finished surface is not quite right.

Hollow tiles are a common concern in residential and commercial buildings. They occur when sections beneath a tile are not adequately supported or bonded to the substrate. This can result from poor surface preparation, inadequate adhesive coverage, incorrect installation techniques or other installation related issues.

What Are Hollow Tiles?

A properly installed tile should have sufficient adhesive contact beneath it to provide consistent support. When significant gaps are left underneath, some areas of the tile may be less supported than others.

This is why a tiled floor can look perfect from above while problems are developing underneath.

How Can You Identify Hollow Tiles?

One of the simplest ways to identify a potentially hollow tile is by comparing the sound it produces with neighbouring tiles.

Lightly tap several tiles using an appropriate non damaging tool and listen to the difference.

A well supported area generally produces a more solid sound, while a tile with significant voids beneath it may produce a noticeably hollow sound.

However, sound alone should not be treated as a complete diagnosis.

You should also look for other warning signs, including:

  • Tiles that move slightly when stepped on
  • Loose tile edges or corners
  • Cracked tiles
  • Cracked or separating grout lines
  • Tiles beginning to lift from the floor
  • Several neighbouring tiles producing similar hollow sounds

When these symptoms occur together, further investigation may be necessary.

What Causes Hollow Tiles?

There is rarely one universal cause. A tiled installation is a system involving the substrate, adhesive, tile and workmanship.

Problems with any of these components can affect the finished installation.

1. Inadequate Adhesive Coverage

One of the most important factors is the amount of contact achieved between the tile, adhesive and substrate.

If adhesive is applied unevenly or adequate coverage is not achieved, voids can remain underneath the tile.

Are Hollow Tiles Always a Serious Problem?

For example, a single tile producing a slightly different sound without movement or cracking may require a different response from several tiles that are loose, visibly lifting or cracking under normal use.

The important thing is to determine the condition of the installation rather than judging it from sound alone.

If hollow sounding tiles are widespread or accompanied by movement and cracking, having the installation assessed by an experienced professional is advisable.

How to Fix Hollow Tiles

The correct repair depends on what is causing the problem and how badly the tile has been affected.

Where an affected tile needs to be replaced, the repair process generally involves addressing the underlying installation problem rather than simply putting the tile back.

1. Identify the Affected Area

Determine whether the problem involves one tile or several tiles.

3. Remove Loose Material and Prepare the Substrate

Simply applying new adhesive over a poorly prepared surface can repeat the same problem.

Remove unsuitable loose material and prepare the substrate according to the requirements of the adhesive being used.

The surface should be sound, clean and properly prepared before a replacement tile is installed.

4. Use an Appropriate Tile Adhesive

For suitable ceramic and vitrified tile applications, a purpose formulated tile adhesive such as Costar Tile Fix 10 can form part of the repair system.

How to Prevent Hollow Tiles

Preventing hollow tiles is usually easier and less expensive than repairing a completed floor.

  • Inspect and properly prepare the substrate.
