Swimming Pool Tiling: Why the Adhesive Behind the Tile Matters

Swimming pool tiling can completely transform the look of a pool. When the tiles line up neatly, the grout lines look clean and the pool is finally filled with water, the entire space can look perfect.

But the real test of a swimming pool tile installation goes beyond what you can see.

Over time, some pool tiles may loosen, shift or develop hollow areas. When this happens, people often focus on the visible tile. However, the problem may have started much deeper within the installation.

The substrate, waterproofing system, adhesive, tile, grout and workmanship all need to work together. The adhesive plays an especially important role because it creates the bond between the tile and the prepared surface underneath.

For contractors, developers, architects and homeowners, understanding what happens behind the tile can help prevent avoidable installation problems and improve the quality of the finished pool.

What Makes Swimming Pool Tiling Different?

Not every tiled surface faces the same conditions.

A living room floor, bathroom wall, building façade and swimming pool may all use tiles, but each application creates different demands.

Swimming pools combine several surfaces in one structure. Installers work across floors, vertical walls, steps, corners and other details while maintaining consistent tile alignment and bonding.

This is why swimming pool tile installation requires careful attention to the complete system, from substrate preparation and waterproofing to adhesive selection and tile installation.

The installation also works alongside a waterproofing system.

Because of these conditions, you should not choose an adhesive simply because it worked on another project.

Before starting swimming pool tiling, consider:

  • The type of tile
  • The size of the tile
  • The condition of the substrate
  • The waterproofing system
  • Whether you are tiling a wall or floor
  • The adhesive manufacturer’s recommended applications
  • The installation method

Looking at these factors early can help you choose a suitable system before work begins.

Why Does the Adhesive Behind Swimming Pool Tiles Matter?

When people admire a finished swimming pool, they notice the tiles, clean joints and overall finish.

Nobody sees the adhesive underneath.

Yet the adhesive creates the connection between the tile and the prepared substrate. Without adequate contact, some parts of the tile may lack proper support.

This can happen when an installer spreads the adhesive unevenly, leaves excessive voids or works on a poorly prepared surface.

Using the right adhesive is therefore only one part of the process. Correct preparation and application matter just as much.

What Can Cause Swimming Pool Tiles to Become Loose?

A loose pool tile does not always point to one specific cause.

Swimming pool tiling involves several materials and installation stages. A problem at any stage can affect the final result.

Here are some important areas to consider.

1. Poor Surface Preparation

Good tile installation starts with the substrate.

Dust, grease, oil, loose particles and other contaminants can interfere with the bond between the adhesive and the surface. Uneven areas can also make consistent adhesive contact more difficult.

Before applying Costar Tile Fix 20, installers should remove loose particles, dust, grease, oil, scale and rust from the surface. They should also level irregular horizontal and vertical surfaces before proceeding with the tile installation.

Skipping these steps may save a little time during installation, but fixing a completed swimming pool can take considerably more time and money.

2. Choosing an Unsuitable Tile Adhesive

Not every tile adhesive suits every project.

A product that works well on an internal residential floor may not necessarily suit a swimming pool.

Before selecting an adhesive, check the manufacturer’s technical information. Pay attention to the recommended tile types, substrates, installation areas and application conditions.

Costar Tile Fix 20 specifically supports swimming pool tiling. Its recommended applications also include tiles over cementitious waterproofing and both vertical and horizontal installations.

Instead of choosing an adhesive based only on price or availability, choose one that matches the requirements of the project.

3. Inadequate Adhesive Coverage

Imagine removing a pool tile and discovering that only a few areas at the back made proper contact with the adhesive.

From the front, the tile might have looked perfectly installed.

Underneath, however, gaps or voids may have reduced the amount of support behind it.

Installers need to spread the adhesive correctly and make adequate contact between the tile, adhesive and substrate.

When working with Costar Tile Fix 20, press the tile into the adhesive using a twisting and front to back sliding movement. This technique helps achieve full adhesive coverage and reduces voids beneath the tile.

If uneven surfaces or variations in tile thickness make installation difficult, apply Tile Fix 20 to the rear of the tile as well as the substrate.

4. Incorrect Adhesive Mixing

On site, adding extra water may seem like a quick way to make tile adhesive easier to spread.

However, manufacturers specify mixing ratios for a reason.

For Costar Tile Fix 20, mix one 20 kg bag with 5 litres of clean water.

Start by pouring the water into a clean container. Slowly add the Tile Fix 20 powder while mixing continuously until you achieve a smooth, lump free consistency.

Allow the mixture to rest for approximately five minutes, then mix it again before application.

Following the recommended ratio gives installers a more consistent mixture than estimating the amount of water on site.

5. Poor Installation Technique

Good materials still require good workmanship.

Rushing the installation, using inappropriate tools, ignoring manufacturer instructions or failing to achieve sufficient adhesive contact can affect the finished work.

Trowel selection also matters.

For tiles up to 60 × 60 cm, the Costar Tile Fix 20 technical guidance recommends a 12 mm trowel. Installers should press each tile properly into the adhesive to achieve good contact.

Product quality and workmanship should always work together.

Why Does Vertical Slip Matter on Swimming Pool Walls?

Swimming pools have both floors and walls.

While gravity does not create the same installation challenge on a horizontal pool floor, it becomes important when an installer starts working vertically.

A tile can move downward after placement if the adhesive cannot provide enough initial hold. Even slight movement may affect alignment and joint spacing.

This makes non slip performance particularly useful for vertical applications.

Costar Tile Fix 20 offers anti dropping performance, no vertical slip and excellent initial adherence. The product is also recommended for large and heavy format ceramic and vitrified tiles, as well as regular sized natural stones.

These properties help installers maintain accurate positioning while working on suitable vertical surfaces.

Why Does Working Time Matter During Tile Installation?

Professional tile installation requires accuracy.

Installers need enough time to position each tile, check the alignment and make necessary corrections.

Costar Tile Fix 20 provides an open time of more than 20 minutes and an adjustment time of approximately 8 minutes. The technical data sheet also gives a pot life of approximately 110 minutes.

These working times allow installers to position and adjust tiles within the specified application period.

Of course, extended open time does not replace good workmanship. Installers still need to follow the manufacturer’s application guidance and work within the stated conditions.

Why Does Flexibility Matter in a Tiled System?

A tiled surface may look completely rigid after installation, but the materials within a building can still experience movement and stress.

Temperature changes, for example, can cause different layers to expand and contract.

An adhesive therefore needs to do more than simply stick the tile to the substrate.

Costar Tile Fix 20 contains polymer and resin modification with added flexibility. This helps the bonding layer resist stresses caused by thermal expansion and contraction.

Considering these conditions during product selection can help create a more appropriate installation system.

Can You Install Pool Tiles Over Cementitious Waterproofing?

Waterproofing and tile adhesive perform different jobs within a swimming pool.

A properly specified waterproofing system protects the structure against water penetration. The tile adhesive, on the other hand, bonds the tile finish to the prepared surface.

Both layers need to work as part of the overall installation.

Costar Tile Fix 20 supports tile installation over cementitious waterproofing.

However, Tile Fix 20 does not replace the need for a properly specified swimming pool waterproofing system.

Always check the requirements and compatibility of the materials within the complete system before installation.

What Should You Look for in a Swimming Pool Tile Adhesive?

Choosing an adhesive does not need to become complicated.

Start by checking whether the manufacturer recommends the product for swimming pool tiling.

You should also consider:

  • Compatibility with the tile type
  • Suitability for the substrate
  • Compatibility with the waterproofing system
  • Adhesion performance
  • Performance on vertical surfaces
  • Working and adjustment time
  • Flexibility
  • Recommended application method

Avoid choosing a product simply because it is available or inexpensive.

The manufacturer’s current technical data sheet provides a better basis for making that decision.

Where Does Costar Tile Fix 20 Fit?

Costar Tile Fix 20 is a high performance cementitious tile adhesive classified as C2TE according to EN 12004.

It combines mixed binders with high adherence and good workability. The formulation provides no vertical slip, extended open time and added flexibility.

Tile Fix 20 works with ceramic and vitrified tiles as well as regular sized natural stones such as granite and marble.

Its listed applications include swimming pool tiling, tiles over cementitious waterproofing, interior and exterior surfaces, vertical and horizontal installations, existing tiled surfaces and floors with underfloor heating.

For suitable swimming pool projects, these characteristics allow contractors to include Tile Fix 20 as part of a properly planned tile installation system.

Correct application, however, remains essential.

How to Apply Costar Tile Fix 20 Correctly

Start by preparing the substrate properly.

Clean away dust, loose particles, grease, oil, scale and rust. Level uneven areas before applying the adhesive.

Then prepare the adhesive:

  1. Measure 5 litres of clean water for one 20 kg bag of Tile Fix 20.
  2. Pour the water into a clean mixing container.
  3. Gradually add the powder while mixing continuously.
  4. Continue mixing until you achieve a smooth, lump free consistency.
  5. Leave the mixture to rest for approximately five minutes.
  6. Mix it again until you achieve the required consistency.

Next, spread a thin layer of adhesive across the prepared substrate with an appropriate notched trowel.

Press each tile into the adhesive using a twisting and sliding movement. This helps improve adhesive contact and minimise voids.

For uneven surfaces or tiles with variations in thickness, apply adhesive to the back of the tile in addition to the substrate.

Allow enough time before moving to the next stage. The Tile Fix 20 technical guidance states that grouting should begin no earlier than 24 hours after tile installation.

Always consult the latest technical data sheet and follow the requirements of the complete swimming pool system.

A Good Swimming Pool Finish Starts Behind the Tile

Beautiful tiles can transform a swimming pool, but appearance only tells part of the story.

The substrate, waterproofing system, adhesive, application technique and workmanship all contribute to the quality of the finished installation. Paying attention to these areas before and during tiling can help reduce avoidable problems later.

For suitable swimming pool applications, Costar Tile Fix 20 provides a C2TE classified cementitious adhesive with high adherence, no vertical slip, extended open time and added flexibility. Its recommended uses specifically include swimming pool tiling and tiling over cementitious waterproofing.

Choosing the appropriate adhesive matters. Preparing the surface and applying that adhesive correctly matter just as much.

After all, the part of a swimming pool tile installation that nobody sees plays an important role in supporting the finish everyone does.
